SOLAR PV
Let SOLA provide clean electricity, from our business to yours.
SOLA is the first Independent Power Producer to be awarded a generation licence for a private utility development, the first private developer to achieve financial close on a wheeling project, and the first private developer to successfully reach commercial operation date on a large-scale private wheeling project in South Africa.
Wheeling is the transfer of electrical power via a utility’s transmission or distribution system between different grid or network service areas. When it comes to renewable energy, wheeling provides an elegant solution to buying cleaner power at a more efficient rate than coal-based power. Essentially, wheeling allows your business to buy clean, private power – whilst still supporting state utility Eskom.
Wheeling allows for an electricity generator such as a solar PV system to supply a direct off-taker via the grid. In order to use the utility’s grid to wheel, the utility will charge a specified Wheeling Tariff which will have to be added to the final cost of electricity for the consumer.
The advantages of wheeling include the servicing of a variety of power demands without the restrictions of ground or roof space in the immediate vicinity. Wheeling also enables increased efficiency and value, as high solar-resource but low environmental and social impact areas can be utilised, allowing lower-cost, cleaner energy to be utilised when needed. With the spread of wheeling, renewable hubs can be created to decrease costs of electricity further.
SOLA can assist with the development, permitting, contracting and realisation of solar PV wheeling projects throughout all project steps. It has a track record of small, medium and large-scale rooftop and ground mount projects applicable to various commercial and industrial property sizes. In addition to this, SOLA has a diverse pool of operating projects and other projects in advanced development stage which can be utilised, requiring only minor permitting steps and fast-tracking of the wheeling process.
Reasons for choosing solar wheeling projects:
- SPACE
If your business or facility uses large amounts of electricity and is connected to the Eskom grid, but does not have sufficient space for a solar PV facility on-site, wheeling is an alternative to providing clean energy on site. - PENETRATION
If achieving 100% renewable energy is part of your strategic business goals, wheeling of solar energy provides increased penetration of renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions and enhancing business sustainability. - COST
Because SOLA’s wheeling facility situates its solar PV farms in the areas with the most solar irradiance, the costs of providing this electricity are affordable – approximately 50% cheaper than typical Eskom grid tariffs.
