Buy Energy
SOLA’s innovative wheeling Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) allow businesses and large energy consumers to purchase green electricity based on their exact energy requirements and preferred contract duration. Energy is available from mature projects that are entering construction, providing a rapid route to bulk financial savings and green benefits for interested buyers.
Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)
SOLA’s wide range of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) provide buyers with the flexibility to match tariffs, contract length and other terms with their specific business needs. We blend generation and storage technologies to maximise savings and carbon offsets.
Under our renewable Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) our buyers receive significant financial savings and decarbonisation benefits while avoiding the risks and costs of asset ownership.
Buyers only pay for the renewable energy delivered, with no upfront payments or ongoing operations and maintenance costs. SOLA is South Africa’s leading provider of renewable energy under PPAs to private energy users in South Africa.
Unique Short Term PPAs from Project Springbok
SOLA now offers a unique range of 2-to-5 year PPAs from Project Springbok, our ground-breaking multi-buyer project which is already under construction. These PPAs allow a wider range of South African businesses to access renewable energy from the Eskom network.
Short-term PPAs from Project Springbok provide significant flexibility to energy users with unpredictable future energy requirements, or who are unable to sign long-term contracts. They allow for fast and simple procurement from a real project with fixed timelines, and can dovetail with parallel renewable energy purchasing to optimise savings and decarbonisation. Project Springbok is already being built and provides the fastest route to clean energy in the country. Choosing the Optimum PPA Duration
SOLA has delivered well over half a gigawatt of renewable energy capacity to private buyers under long-term PPA agreements (typically 15 to 20 years). Our long-term PPAs allow us to achieve extremely low tariffs at low escalation rates, resulting in maximum savings relative to grid tariffs.
SOLA has also pioneered the provision of shorter-duration PPAs on the back of our groundbreaking multi-buyer projects. By securing multiple buyers from an individual generation asset, we can offer a range of PPA durations to best match our buyer’s requirements in terms of term and tariff. SOLA is the only company in South Africa to successfully finance a true multi-buyer project of this nature, Project Springbok.
All of our PPAs represent partnerships, and we guarantee that all buyers reliably receive their contracted benefits in terms of delivered energy and decarbonisation
What is wheeling?
Wheeling is the delivery of energy from a generator to an end-user located in another area through the use of an existing distribution or transmission networks.
Eskom’s wheeling mechanism allows buyers connected to the Eskom network to benefit from PPAs from SOLA’s renewable energy fleet, regardless of the individual buyer’s location. Under a wheeling agreement, Eskom credits a buyer for the renewable energy that they have purchased from an Independent Power Producer.
SOLA pioneered the large-scale wheeling of renewable power with the implementation of the 10MW Adams solar PV project for Amazon.
Our 200 MW solar wheeling facility for Tronox Mineral Sands is the second of this kind to deliver power to the grid. With a significant pipeline of additional projects in or approaching construction, SOLA is ready to deliver low-cost clean power to your operations. Our wheeling solutions can couple both renewable generation and energy storage to best match the required load profile.
Behind-the-meter PPAs
SOLA has delivered behind-the-meter (BTM) generation capacity on a PPA basis to buyers across South Africa, including Heineken and Ab-Inbev.
Our behind-the-meter PPAs are well suited to energy users with access to suitable land and who wish to achieve additional objectives such as localisation benefits, and load shedding protection.
SOLA Assets’ industry-leading development team handles the full project development cycle, securing all environmental and legal approvals required for project implementation.
