Why Graduate Mentorship Matters in Renewable Energy
The renewable energy sector is evolving rapidly, bringing with it an increasing demand for skilled engineers who can help design and deliver the infrastructure that will power South Africa’s future. While university provides the technical foundation, there’s no substitute for real-world experience.
SOLA believes that developing renewable energy projects also means developing the people behind them. Through our Youth Development Programme, aspiring engineers gain practical experience and contribute to projects that are shaping the country’s energy transition.
One of the engineering graduates currently participating in the programme is Matthew Tarentaal, who joined SOLA’s engineering team to begin turning academic knowledge into practical application. This is Matthew’s journey through his mentorship with SOLA.
Learning beyond the classroom
For many graduates, the transition from university to the workplace is one of the biggest milestones in their careers. Concepts that were once taught in lectures become real engineering challenges, and every day presents an opportunity to learn something new.
Reflecting on the start of his journey at SOLA, Matthew shared:
“I’m passionate about stewarding our natural resources well, so renewable energy felt like the perfect way to combine my engineering skills with my desire to contribute to a more sustainable future.”
Like many graduates entering the industry, he quickly discovered that engineering is about far more than technical calculations. Success comes from collaboration, problem-solving and understanding how different disciplines come together to deliver complex renewable energy projects.
Learning from experienced professionals
A key part of the mentorship programme is the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers who provide guidance, share practical knowledge and encourage continuous development. Rather than simply observing from the sidelines, graduates are given meaningful exposure to real projects and are encouraged to ask questions, contribute ideas and build confidence through experience.
When asked about one of the biggest lessons he’s learned so far, Matthew explained:
“My mentor taught me that growth often comes from taking on challenges before you feel completely ready. Having someone to guide you, challenge your thinking and help you work through problems makes that learning experience even more valuable.”
These experiences help bridge the gap between theory and practice, allowing graduates to develop both their technical expertise and the professional skills needed to succeed in the renewable energy sector.
Building confidence through experience
Every project presents new opportunities to grow. Whether it’s contributing to engineering discussions, working with multidisciplinary teams or gaining exposure to utility-scale renewable energy developments, each experience helps build confidence for the future.
One moment that stands out for Matthew is:
“Building the Performance Ratio calculator for Springbok was a highlight for me because it challenged me to learn beyond the task itself. It gave me a chance to explore how different parts of the plant work together and broaden my understanding of renewable energy.”
These milestones are an important reminder that professional growth happens through practical experience, supported by guidance from colleagues who are invested in developing the next generation of industry professionals.
Investing in the future of renewable energy
As South Africa continues its transition towards a more sustainable energy future, the need for skilled engineers will only continue to grow. Graduate mentorship programmes play an important role in preparing young professionals for this responsibility by providing the opportunity to learn in a real project environment while working alongside experienced teams.
Looking ahead, Matthew is excited about what comes next:
“In five years, I hope to be an established member of the SOLA team, making a meaningful contribution to the renewable energy industry while continuing to grow both technically and personally. I’d also love to play a role in creating the same positive culture that attracted me to SOLA.”
His journey reflects what SOLA’s graduate mentorship programme is all about: creating opportunities for talented graduates to develop their skills, gain valuable industry experience and contribute to projects that are making a lasting impact.
Because powering positive energy isn’t only about delivering renewable energy solutions. It’s about investing in the people who will help shape the future of the industry.
SOLA’s Graduate Programme by the Numbers
SOLA takes a quality-over-quantity approach to developing emerging talent, with a focused graduate programme designed to provide meaningful mentorship and practical industry experience.
Statistics below represent data from the inception of SOLA’s Youth Development Programme:
- 3–5 graduates mentored each year
- 29 graduates have completed the programme to date
- 33.33% have been offered permanent positions at SOLA
- 7 universities represented, primarily UCT and Stellenbosch University
- 6–12 months average mentorship duration
- 5+ disciplines represented, spanning Engineering, Data Science and Environmental Studies
